The difference in Arsenal’s first Premier League game of the 2019/20 season was a goal from one of the most recent campaign’s top goal scorers, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.
It was the Gabonese international’s 50th league appearance which he sealed off in grand style through his dinked goal, gifting the Gunners a well-deserved triumph after a very tough fight at St. James Park on Sunday afternoon.
Expectations were high on a rainy day. Both sides took turns to launch threats into one another’s territory although none of them all through the opening half put any at advantage.
Ainsley Maitland-Niles intervened to break the barren start when he picked up Aubameyang who in turn converted in the 58th minute of the encounter.
We all envisaged something better prior to the game but still appreciated the result at the end of it all. It was three points from an away match. The clean sheet kept makes it more remarkable considering the fact that we only did that on the road once in the last season.
None of our new signings made the starting lineup though three of them; Dani Ceballos, Nicolas Pepe and Gabriel Martinelli were later introduced as substitutes to replace Joe Willock, Reiss Nelson and Henrikh Mkhitaryan. David Luiz was unused while Kieran Tierney is still recovering from injury.
Speaking to the press after the match, Unai Emery stated that available new signings were not involved from the start because they were not fully ready. Pepe has trained with the lot for just one week, Ceballos recently rejoined after a short injury while Luiz has had just one full session with the squad.
By lunchtime on Saturday, we will be in action again against Burnley. It will be at the Emirates Stadium.
