If reports are anything to go by, Arsenal are on the verge of sealing a transfer for William Saliba, a claim which seems to have been validated by the club's president.
The Gunners have been after the defender as they are ready to meet his £26 million fee.
They will also agree to a term by Saint-Etienne which requires them to loan out the player to them after sealing a deal. He is expected to remain with them for a season.
According to a French publication, an opening offer from Arsenal was rejected because the Ligue 1 side want all payments made upfront instead of through add-ons.
Negotiations are still alive between the two parties, with a compromise closely approaching.
Saint-Etienne President has now come out to give a clue on the whole issue. His statement makes it clear that Saliba will soon seize to become a permanent employee of theirs.
"He will stay at the club this season," the president said. "It is an imperative condition should we come to an agreement for his transfer. It’s also William's wish."
Saliba's impressive form in his 19 appearances last season earned him a four-year contract at St. Etienne.
In as much as fans want Arsenal to bring in new faces, they won't be satisfied that their club have to spend such an amount on a teenager who will not play a part in the 2019/20 season.
