Arsenal placed Samuel Umtiti top on their summer transfer list in their bid to build a better and stronger backline ahead of the new season.
The Gunners failed to finish in the top four in the just-concluded Premier League campaign and when another chance came for them to appear in the Champions League via the Europa League final, they blew it.
It isn't news that the failure of the North London side under Unai Emery, just as it was in the closing years of Arsene Wenger, can be pinned to the poor quality of the defence.
No wonder Arsenal are greatly concerned about getting a solution to the problem that have dented their hopes on several occasions.
Prior to the start of the transfer window, reports suggested that the Gunners have prepared to pounce on Umtiti. The Barcelona man was finding it hard to get regular playtime and it was believed that he would be leaving the Nou Camp for greener pastures once the season came to an end.
That account seems to have taken a twist as fresh updates say that the French international have now vowed to remain so as to fight his way to regular play.
This is despite the pursuit of Ajax's De Ligt by the Spanish side who will likely want to ship him off if they succeed in signing the 19-year-old sensation.
If things play out as stated, then I don't feel it should cause any form of setback for Arsenal. The window is still infant, so there's enough time to look elsewhere.
I won't even want us to go for Umtiti. He is injury prone and it won't make any sense if we acquire such a player out of our little budget.
