On Wednesday night, Arsenal made many wonder how they managed to make it to the final of the Europa League. That we lost was not just the issue but the nature of the scoreline further broke the hearts of supporters whose hopes were on high. Who loses 4-1 in a final?
Wondering why it took me so long before posting anything about the game? It is because I was not in the right state of mind to make any form of commentary as I was so downcast. Even as I type, I am still nursing great agony in me.
Our first half display made it look like we were going to get something good out of the encounter but it did not take too long before reality dawned on us. Oh! I pitied the travelling fans the most.
Failing to convert chances when they come have hunted us in the psst and it was not any different on the occasion.
After our clear penalty call was ignored by the referee and VAR, efforts from Alexandre Lacazette and Granite Xhaka failed to make it to the back of the net.
The visitors rose towards the end of the half, forcing saves from Petr Cech in what was his last competitive game of a successful footballing career. Olivier Giroud, our former man, was denied too. He would later initiate the coup against us.
Moments after restart, Giroud stretched to make a header. 1-0. Pedro followed up with another in the 60th minute prior to a third from the spot by Eden Hazard.
Alex Iwobi came on to send in a volley which the team failed to build confidence on. In our trademark fashion, we conceded a fourth to give Eden Hazard a brace. If as reported, he will be off to Real Madrid, then he bowed out with heads high while our own Cech was given a disappointing send-off.
