Arsenal have finally confirmed the transfer of Lucas Torreira to the Emirates Stadium. The club revealed this on its official website and Twitter handle a while ago to the joy of fans like me who have waited endlessly for an announcement.
The 22-year-old midfielder jetted in from Russia where he represented Uruguay at the ongoing World Cup tournament. While in Russia, Arsenal wanted the business concluded on time so they offered to conduct a medical for Torreira in Russia but he declined saying that he wanted no distraction. All that is now history. He is a Gunner now.
Arsenal paid £27 million to sign him from Sampdoria so as to get a feel of what they have missed in defensive midfield for years. He will move straight into the first team. He will wear the number 11 shirt recently vacated by Mesut Ozil.
So far this summer, this is the biggest signing Arsenal have made having previously signed three players, Stephan Lichtsteiner, Bernd Leno and Sokratis Papastathopoulos.
Welcome to Arsenal Torreira. Looking forward to seeing you in action from next season.
