Arsene Wenger has given the reason behind his decision to make Olivier Giroud captain when Arsenal faced Preston North End.
The striker was once again in the score book as he scored late in the match to give the Gunners a place in the fourth round of the Emirates FA Cup.
Club captain, Laurent Koscielny was missing, so the band had to be worn by someone else. Surprisingly, it was Giroud who had it on.
Wenger revealed after the game that the French international's projection of his leadership qualities in recent weeks earned him the captaincy.
“He has scored many goals recently. Everybody contributes and he’s in good form at the moment. It’s been goal after goal,” Wenger said via Sky Sports.
“I like to rotate the captaincy. He went through a period of discomfort when he didn’t play and that was quite long but he kept his focus and worked. He’s shown leadership qualities and that’s why he was captain.”
Giroud looks to be on the high right now considering his contributions in recent times. He scored the winner against West Bromwich Albion, the opener against Crystal Palace via a scorpion flick and also the equaliser against Bournemouth last Tuesday.
