Per Mertesacker has confirmed today that he is set to begin training with the Arsenal first team after a long absence.
The centre-back has been out through a knee injury he suffered in pre-season but it now seems he has completed his rehabilitation.
The 32-er-old posted the picture below on Twitter with the caption: ‘Rehab couldn’t of gone better but now all packed and ready to come back home to the team! #ReturnOfTheBFG,’
The nature and length of his fitness problem prompted the signing of Shkodran Mustafi who together with Laurent Koscielny has built a strong backline for the Gunners.
Our game against Man United this weekend will be too early for him. Maybe he'll make his return when we play Southampton in the EFL Cup quarter-finals later this month.
Per is not expected to feature so soon being that it's been a while he tasted competitive action. I see him joining the reserve team before forging higher. This would enable him shake off any match rustiness in him.
